#SelfStarterStories: From being an Area Sales Manager to becoming the Founder of a Cookery Club for children

This week's #selfstarterstory features Ruth Chubb, Founder of Three Bears Cookery Club.

#PickYourselfUK caught up with Ruth to learn more about her entrepreneurial journey.

What was your last job?: Area Sales Manager for Avon Cosmetics

When did you choose to PICK YOURSELF instead of waiting to be chosen by someone else?: I've always wanted to start my own business and work around my family life. I had my business idea of children's cookery clubs a few years before but the time wasn't right for me to start it so I put it on hold.

I felt like I got to a point where I was feeling fed up of working a 60 hour week for no real return and not spending any quality time with my children. They were desperate to do after school activities and we found ourselves cramming it into the weekend and then Monday would come around again and we hadn't spent any quality time together. My youngest was only 2 and I really wanted to spend some time with her before she started school. So that was the point I decided I needed to do something. My husband was so supportive and as his job was challenging and he was away a lot it seemed like the best thing to do for our family and for my own sanity!

I started the Three Bears Cookery Club in July 2016 running clubs from my kitchen and I have never looked back!

What was the most challenging part of starting a business?: Getting the pricing right and generating an income, the first year of business was hard, but so worth it!

Do you do everything yourself? What do you outsource?: I do all the behind-the-scenes work myself, I do have a designer who designed our new logo and I also have 3 Cookery Club Teachers who help me run the clubs.

What is your favourite marketing tool ?: Snapseed, I love it for tweaking my pictures to share on my social media sites

How do you market your business?: I do a lot of advertising on social media and get most of my customers from Facebook. I also advertise in local children's activity magazines and send flyers to primary schools

When you first launched, how did you get your first paying customers?: Facebook advertising, posters in the local area and flyers to schools

How did you get your first traffic to your website?: A lot of hard work on social media sharing the website. My blog on the website has helped increased traffic too.

Nominate one person/friend who believed in you from the start, and what would you like to say to them today?: My husband, he has been so supportive and continues to be so. He is always there encouraging me when things aren't going so well and celebrating my successes. Thank you, Tom, you are the best!

What would you say to someone who is toying with the idea to start a business but haven't yet?: Just go for it!! When I started my business I had an idea, I didn't have a business plan or a marketing plan but I knew what my end goal was and how I was going to get there!
