#SelfStarterStories: From Marketing Manager for Lucozade to setting up her own Consultancy for SMEs
Today’s #selfstarterstory features Lesley Bambridge, Founder of We Mean Business London.
PickYourselfUK caught up with Lesley to learn more about her entrepreneurial journey.
What was your last job?:
I was the Marketing Manager at Lucozade Energy, managing a team of 6 and a budget of £14m
When did you choose to PICK YOURSELF instead of waiting to be chosen by someone else?: Marketing startups is what we do, and this is a great way to promote us and our business to a startup audience.
What was the most challenging part of starting a business?:
Having the resilience to believe in yourself and your ideas. It’s daunting to put yourself out there but once you do you won’t look back.
What is your favourite business book and why?:
Seth Godin The Purple Cow - he’s THE marketing guru and makes everything so simple.
You're either a Purple Cow or you're not. You're either remarkable or invisible. Make your choice. What do Apple, Starbucks, Dyson and Pret a Manger have in common? How do they achieve spectacular growth, leaving behind former tried-and-true brands to gasp their last?
The old checklist of P's used by marketers - Pricing, Promotion, Publicity - aren't working anymore. The golden age of advertising is over. It's time to add a new P - the Purple Cow. Purple Cow describes something phenomenal, something counterintuitive and exciting and flat-out unbelievable. In his new bestseller, Seth Godin urges you to put a Purple Cow into everything you build, and everything you do, to create something truly noticeable. It's a manifesto for anyone who wants to help create products and services that are worth marketing in the first place.
Do you do everything yourself? What do you outsource?:
Yes, we do everything ourselves but that’s part of the startup experience. I find from the startups we work with, the ones up for the challenge are the ones who do really well.
What is your favourite marketing tool ?:
RecurPost because once you create great content this is a way to get it repeatedly out to your audience and keep it visible, and Instagram simply because it’s a great way to visually show and tell your brand story.
How do you market your business?:
We use social media a great deal to promote our blogs and our free advice. We give panel talks and workshops.
We have great contacts and a network of accelerators, other startup support services and startups we know who recommend us as word of mouth works best!
When you first launched, how did you get your first paying customers?:
We stuck to our marketing plan and our first client came to us after seeing us doing a talk down in Brixton. It takes some time to get started, but it’s worth it when it works.
How did you get your first traffic to your website?:
Blogging and promoting it across social media and using my network on LinkedIn were a great help at the start.
Some of our blogs are still being read and bring us new clients, which is why it’s such a great marketing tool for startups.
Nominate one person/friend who believed in you from the start, and what would you like to say to them today?:
My husband who always believes in me, I’d like to say thank you
What would you say to someone who is toying with the idea to start a business but haven't yet?: Be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotions, hard work and amazing opportunity. Literally the more you put in, the more you get out. Just go for it, there’s never a right time, but the leap is worth while.
If you could have dinner with one entrepreneur, who would it be and why?:
Gary Vaynerchuk - I love his no-nonsense style and his marketing advice is brilliant!
