#SelfStarterStories: From being a Marketing Manager to becoming a Marketing Consultant

Today's #selfstarterstory features Alex Elliott, Founder of Rain Marketing.

PickYourselfUK caught up with Alex to find out more about her entrepreneurial journey.

What was your last job?:

I was a marketing manager at a private hospital group. After 6 years it was time for a new challenge. I left to work for another company and in six short weeks, I realised I was not right for them and visa versa. I left with nothing to go to - the scariest thing I have ever done, with a family to provide for.

When did you choose to PICK YOURSELF instead of waiting to be chosen by someone else?:

I just saw the link and thought why not! I have learnt over the last year to be very proud of what I have achieved.

What was the most challenging part of starting a business?:

Everything! I think the hardest challenge has been having to wear lots of hats and learn a lot about all aspects of running a business, not just the area you are an expert in!

What is your favourite business book and why?:

The Work - Byron Katie. This book has taught me a lot about how to deal with my own confidence and how not to overthink issues when they arise.

Do you do everything yourself? What do you outsource?:

I outsource social media posting and google pay-per-click work to a team of freelancers who are part of the rain marketing team!

What is your favourite marketing tool ?:

Monday.com - it is a life-changer, it is such a good project management tool, and clients can have access too.

How do you market your business?:

Mainly through networking and people I know. I have been very lucky to receive a lot of referrals through word of mouth from current clients.

When you first launched, how did you get your first paying customers?:

An old contact had asked me to do some work for him while I was looking for a 'proper' job....... and that is where it all started! I had a great relationship with him and he knew I could deliver.

How did you get your first traffic to your website?:

Mainly through social media, blogs and content.

Nominate one person/friend who believed in you from the start, and what would you like to say to them today?:

Dad - I always value my dad's opinion and when I was at a crossroads with starting a new business or getting a job, he knew me so well, he only had to say - you know you will do everything in your power to make this work, and if you don't do it, you know you will only regret not trying.

What I would say to him is - Thank you for giving me the push I needed to take the plunge, my life now has a completely different outlook and your support has meant everything.

What would you say to someone who is toying with the idea to start a business but haven't yet?:

Do it. I always think it is better to do something, try it and it possibly not work, than live your whole life wondering what if.

If you could have dinner with one entrepreneur, who would it be and why?:

Alan Sugar - I would like to know what he is like under all the bravado! Plus I would love to say 'You’re Fired' to him!
